India’s Finance Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman recently presented the Interim Budget 2024-25 on February 1, 2024. India military budget got a new announcement regarding the launch of a new scheme to develop deep tech. for the purpose of defence in India.
India military budget – What is deep Tech?
“Deep tech” refers to startups and companies developing technology-based solutions grounded in substantial scientific or engineering challenges. Unlike typical consumer-focused tech companies, deep tech ventures often involve lengthy development cycles, significant R&D investments, and a high degree of technical complexity. They tend to focus on areas such as:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML): Advanced algorithms and models for tasks ranging from image recognition to natural language processing and autonomous decision-making.
- Biotechnology: Innovations in genetics, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, often leveraging cutting-edge biology and chemistry research.
- Advanced Materials: Development of new materials with unique properties for applications in industries like aerospace, electronics, and energy.
- Quantum Computing: Harnessing quantum mechanics to develop new computational methods that could surpass classical computers in solving certain types of problems.
- Robotics: Building advanced robotic systems capable of performing complex tasks in diverse environments, from manufacturing to healthcare.
- Space Technology: Innovations related to satellite technology, space exploration, and related infrastructure.
- Clean Energy and Environmental Technology: Developing sustainable energy solutions, such as advanced solar cells, energy storage systems, and technologies for reducing environmental impact.
Simply put, Deep technology or Deep Tech. refers to startups which base their work on extremely advanced technological innovations in the fields of science and engineering.
● Monitor its borders in real-time- To keep a watch on our borders continuously, both during the day and at night, identifying invasions, and monitor army movements, high-resolution satellites and drones with sophisticated sensors are required.
● Safeguard the sensitive defense Information- There is a need for unbreakable encryption that can protect critical defence related conversations and messages from existing hacking tools.
● Get tactical advantage- Monitoring enemy’s radar and radio signals to learn about their tactics and weaknesses is a requirement in modern warfare.
● Engage in electronic warfare- To jam and disable the electronic systems of a missile and make it crash during electronic warfare by using the microwave and radio-based frequencies .
Cost:- A substantial investment in infrastructure, R&D, and research is necessary to implement these cutting-edge technologies. With this new budget, it looks like government has decided to help in this matter.
Worldwide laws:- Certain technologies may be governed by global laws and export prohibitions too. It is yet to see how this gets handled in future.
India’s Defence & Deep-Tech Startups
Deep tech companies have the potential to revolutionize industries and address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, but they require a robust ecosystem of support, including investors, research institutions, and policy frameworks to thrive.
Deep tech startups in India are growing each year, using advanced technology to strengthen our national defense. Some companies making a difference by their innovations quite useful for defence are:-
1. Tonbo Imaging
Tonbo Imaging is a company that focuses on creating extremely smart cameras. These cameras are used for surveillance of important places on the border, especially in the Himalayan region. Tonbo imaging devices can be used to evaluate damage following natural catastrophes, which makes them potentially useful in the Indian Army’s relief operations. To deter any territorial expansion by China, precise maps of isolated regions such as Arunachal Pradesh can be made using high-resolution aerial images.
2. DronaMaps
DronaMaps is a company that builds flying robots, also known as drones. Drones give the armed forces a bird’s-eye view of different situations. They are super helpful for surveillance in the places where it is difficult for humans to reach quickly. As a promising business in the drone technology space, Dronamaps has been recognized by the government and is featured on the Startup India portal too.
3. Quantiphi
Quantiphi is a company that uses smart computer programs to analyze big sets of data. This helps to pick out possible threats before they become a problem. They have expertise in identifying and fixing vulnerabilities in systems that compromise security, mitigating damage and protecting against cyberattacks, and implementing robust security protocols to protect data and infrastructure.
4. Astra Microwave
Conclusion-
These advanced, cutting-edge technologies developed by deep tech startups are making a big impact on the safety of our country. From surveillance to extremely secure communications and even flying UAVs, these innovations are transforming the game. As these startups continue to grow and find support in India’s Military Budget, they not only help our defense but also put India on the map as a world leader in using technology to protect our nation and its citizens. The secret is in ethical thinking, responsible development, and strategic execution based on India’s unique requirements and goals.
