Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan history and political journey have been full of reflection and strength. Born on Dec 3, 1986, in the village of Chhutmalpur, Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Azad’s early years were shaped by the values of education and social justice taught by his father, Govardhan Das, a retired principal, and his mother, Kamlesh Devi.
After his father’s death, he thought about studying abroad but decided to stay in India to fight the injustices faced by the Dalit community. This decision was crucial, leading him towards activism and public service.
His activism started with a strong act of defiance when he put up a sign that read “The Great Chamars of Ghadkhauli Welcome You,” boldly challenging the caste discrimination in his village.
The Bhim Army
In 2014, Azad co-founded the Bhim Army with Satish Kumar and Vinay Ratan Singh. The Bhim Army became a source of hope for the Dalit community, focusing on education as a way to gain freedom. By running free schools for Dalits in western Uttar Pradesh, the group honored Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy of fighting for equality and justice.
Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan History: NSA and Jail
Chandrashekhar Azad, a law graduate, became a well-known figure in the fight for Dalit rights in India. In July 2015, he started the Bhim Army Ekta Mission to help Dalits through education. The organization began quietly working within the Dalit community but soon gained national attention due to its protests against injustices in Saharanpur. It now runs nearly 300 schools in the region.
The NSA (National Security Act) is a strict law that allows authorities to detain someone for months if they believe that person is a threat to national security or public order. When the NSA was used against Azad, many people criticized it, saying it was a misuse of the law to silence him.
Azad’s experience with the legal system has been difficult. After he was granted bail in 2017, the Uttar Pradesh government used the NSA to keep him in jail, even though there wasn’t enough evidence against him. Many Bhim Army leaders and supporters saw this as a political move by the BJP government to silence a Dalit leader who was standing up for his community’s rights.
On September 20, 2018, the Uttar Pradesh government told the Supreme Court that the NSA charges against Azad had been dropped. This news was a huge relief to his supporters and was seen as a win for justice and the rule of law. Azad’s release was a significant moment for the Bhim Army and the larger Dalit movement in India.
In a recent podcast with ANI News, Chandrashekhar shared about his time in jail and his future plans to develop his constituency as a member of parliament.
Founding Azad Samaj Party
In 2020, Azad made a big move by founding the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), named after the respected Kanshi Ram, a key figure in the fight for Dalit rights. This step marked Azad’s shift from grassroots activism to formal politics, giving marginalized communities a platform to have their voices heard.
The 2024 general elections were a key moment for Azad and his party. Running from the Nagina Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, he won with a large margin, showing the trust and support of the people. His victory was not just a personal win but also a symbol of the hopes of millions who want a more inclusive and fair society.
