Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath openly admitted that being over-confident hurt the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) chances in the recent elections. Speaking at the BJP’s state working committee meeting on Sunday, held at the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Auditorium, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University in Lucknow, he stressed the need for staying alert and active.
The Meeting and Its Purpose
The meeting was held to talk about the party’s performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections and to make plans for the upcoming by-elections and the 2027 Assembly elections. The BJP, which had a strong position in Uttar Pradesh, saw a drop in its vote share. In 2019, the party won 62 seats, but this time they managed only 33. The opposition INDIA bloc, led by the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress, made big gains. The SP won 37 seats, while the Congress got six.
The BJP’s allies, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Apna Dal (Soneylal), won two and one seats, respectively, making the total for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) 36 seats. This change in power was a big surprise for the BJP, which had dominated UP politics for the past ten years.
CM Yogi stressed the need for all party members to be active and alert. He urged everyone, from MPs to councilors, to start preparing for the next elections right away.
