Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, May 18, 2024 — A series of violent mob attacks have left international students in Kyrgyzstan fearing for their safety. The incidents, which escalated in recent days, have targeted students from various countries, including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Why international students were attacked?
The violence erupted after videos of a fight between local students and medical students from Egypt were shared online on May 13. A video of the fight went viral on social media, and the conflict spilled onto the streets of Bishkek.
The situation quickly escalated, leading to attacks on hostels of medical universities in Bishkek, where foreign students reside. The hostels are currently occupied by students mostly hailing from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Protests against Foreign migrants
Later on May 17, a group of individuals in the age range of 18 to 25 gathered in Bishkek and conducted a rally due to their concerns regarding the increasing influx of migrants from countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Egypt, and others.
Kyrgyzstan’s national security chief Kamchybek Tashiev supported the rally by saying, “We have statistics on violations by migrants. Violations are mainly made by nationals of Pakistan and Bangladesh. More than 1500 Pakistanis and over 1000 nationals of Bangladesh were deported from Kyrgyzstan. According to our information, around 5000 foreigners violated our laws, 1360 nationals of Pakistan, 1300 nationals of Bangladesh and nationals of other countries among them.”

Indian students have been caught in the crossfire. Several hostels housing international students were attacked, leading to injuries. Although there have been reports of injuries to certain Pakistani students, no Indian student has been reported imjured in the violence. The Indian Embassy in Kyrgyzstan has recommended that Indian students remain indoors and stay connected with the Embassy on a regular basis.

Kyrgyzstan has emerged as a popular choice among medical students primarily because of its affordable tuition fees. Presently, around 14,500 Indian students are enrolled in educational programs within the country. However, tensions have been escalating due to the presence of migrants, particularly from South Asia, which has unfortunately resulted in recent outbreaks of violence.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar assured that the Indian Ministry of External Affairs is closely monitoring the situation. He encouraged Indian students to stay connected with the Embassy and assured them that the situation is currently calm.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif also showed worry about the attacks and instructed the Pakistani Ambassador to offer any necessary support and assistance to the affected students.

Kyrgyz Government’s Response
The Kyrgyz government has taken measures to restore order. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued press releases stating that the situation is under control, In order to maintain peace and order, the city has increased its security measures, with various law enforcement agencies collaborating closely. Additionally, the government has officially stated that no Pakistani students have lost their lives in the recent incidents of violence targeting international students.
The Cabinet of Ministers also released a statement over the issue-“The authorities are undertaking resolute measure to curb illegal migration and deport undesired persons for the last several months. Any insinuations aimed at inciting intolerance towards foreign students are unacceptable and do not correspond to the spirit of friendship and hospitality for which our people have always been famous.”
